Background
Ock Mill is a busy Beefeater restaurant sharing a site and gas supply with a Premier Inn hotel. Any loss of gas affects both businesses at once.
The challenge
On a Saturday evening staff reported a gas smell in the bar wash-up area. Cadent attended and cut the supply to the entire building, taking the restaurant kitchen and the hotel's heating and hot water offline simultaneously.
What we did
- 1Attended the same evening and carried out tightness testing to IGEM/UP/1A to locate the leak.
- 2Isolated the affected section locally so the hotel's supply, heating and hot water could be safely restored that night.
- 3Traced the fault to a 2" steel main buried unprotected in the floor screed; surveyed and priced the permanent repair over the weekend.
- 4Mobilised Monday: broke out the floor and replaced the main with 40 m of 54 mm copper, replacing the equally unprotected service pipe while the floor was open.
- 5Reinstated the floor and carpet in sections so the restaurant could reopen while final finishes were completed.
Results
- 5 days — Saturday closure to Thursday reopening
- 0 nights — Hotel closure
- 40 m — Copper main replaced
- 1 — Root cause permanently removed
